> info:
doctor faustus has made a deal with the devil: he’s sold his soul for the electric light. why, then, with the whole world illuminated by his invention, does he still wander in the dark, grasping at happiness, peace, connection? stein’s take on the faust legend invites us to consider our contemporary lives: consumed in technology, bathed in artificial light, and haunted by images of the past that we too often confuse with the future. what does it mean to live in the present? what do we mean when we say we are here?
includes the following selections:
1 in the house of doctor faustus
2 bathe me in the electric lights
3 leave me alone
4 her name is
5 the main chorus (a very grand ballet of lights)
6 you are as you are not
7 yes they shine
8 prelude to the end
9 faustus sinks into the darkness
10 the doctor faustus waltz
the musicians who played on the recordings were benjamin firer (trombone), gleb kanasevich (clarinet, bass clarinet and bassett horn), matt rosenthal (double bass) and adrian knight (keyboards, guitars, percussion, electronics). additional piano on "yes they shine": paul kerekes.
