Music Engraving (Copyist Services)

For over 10 years I’ve offered copying/engraving services to publishers, composers and musicians at competitive rates. As a composer with plenty of first hand experience working with orchestras, ensembles and performers, I understand the needs and wants of both musicians, composers and librarians. My goal is to deliver not only flawless but aesthetically pleasing documents that address all the common issues with self-published scores and parts and make the act of reading and playing as seamless as possible.

Services include: score preparation from handwritten manuscripts, scanned materials, midi files, xml files and Sibelius files; layout and editing of scores and parts; detailed proofreading to ensure compliance with present day publishing standards and MOLA guidelines. As an experienced rehearsal pianist, I make idiomatic and precise piano reductions for vocal scores (operas and choral works). Materials are delivered as print ready PDFs using standard page sizes and formats as appropriate or specifically requested.

Projects include operas, orchestral works, ensemble works, vocal works and solo/chamber works by David Lang (prisoner of the state, the loser, anatomy theater, symphony without a hero, harmony and understanding), Hannah Lash (Beowulf, Desire, Leander and Hero, The Voynich Symphony, Requiem) Fred Lerdahl (Cyclic Descent, Time and Again, String Quartet No. 4 “Chaconne”), Bernard Rands (“ the receding mist...”, “...sans voix parmi les voix...”), Alvin Singleton (La Flora, Apple, Across Differences), Stewart Wallace (Hat Trunk) and Frank Zappa (200 Motels), as well as works by Alex Mincek, Kate Soper, Julia Wolfe, Michael Gordon, Mozart, Ives and Bruckner, most of  which end up in both print and digital formats at major publishers such as Schott Music, Red Poppy and Universal.

Audio Mixing & Editing

As a recording engineer I have maintained a project studio for the past 10 years, as well as doing occasional on location recording. Clients include String Orchestra of Brooklyn, Scott Wollschleger, Ted Hearne, Karl Larson, Bryce Hackford, Tom Noble, Alice Cohen, David Lackner/Galtta Media, Mike Wexler, Nick Stevens, Red Light New Music, Richard Carrick, and David Kaplan.

I offer fast and detailed editing of pre-existing projects/stems, including noise removal, integration of takes/punches, enhancement/clean-up of live recordings, and I’m happy to address issues like phasing, feedback, unwanted resonances and the like. I can also mix more complicated sessions with up to 16 channels of analog summing, and virtually limitless tracks in-the-box with hundreds of industry standard plugins and auxiliary software (Waves, Izotope, Melodyne et al) across many genres and styles, including classical, contemporary classical/new music, jazz, free improvisation, electronic, and pop/rock.

My main DAWs are Reaper and Logic Pro. If your mix contains effects and colors that are essential to the character of your music, please send printed stems (spatial effects as separate stems if possible) to safeguard the sonics of your track, but generally speaking I prefer working with raw, unprocessed tracks. Delivery is in 24-bit/44.1kHz WAV/AIFF unless otherwise specified and includes the stereo mixdown(s), complete set of stems and the session file(s).

Recording & Production

As a multi-instrumentalist, I have contributed keyboard, synth, bass, guitar and vocal performances in many styles and genres on numerous releases including Bryce Hackford (Safe Exits, Spring Theory), Tom Noble (Flashlight 12”, Rush Hour), Alice Cohen (Artificial Fairytales, NNA Tapes), Family in Mourning ft. Lydia Lunch (Eulogy, Galtta Media), Anthony Vine (Remnants, Galtta Media), and albums by Synthetic Love Dream, Private Elevators, Blue Jazz TV, Nick Stevens et al. I can perform from pre-existing scores or lead sheets, improvise from chord charts, or create original parts according to your needs.

Although I am active in many styles and genres, my background and focus is in classical and new music, and I sight-read well. Though not a concert pianist, I have played most of the reportoire in the classical canon, including the keyboard and piano works by Beethoven and Mozart (Sonatas, Concertos, Variations), Bach (English Suites, French Suites, Partitas, The Well-Tempered Clavier, The Musical Offering et al), Chopin (Waltzes, Ballades, Etudes, Preludes, Sonatas, Impromptus et al), Debussy (Estampes, Preludes, Images), Liszt (Sonata in B Minor, Consolations, Ballades, Deux Legendes, Annees de Pelerinage et al), Schubert (sonatas, Impromptus, Moments Musicaux), Schumann (Piano Concerto, Kinderszenen, Faschingsschwank Aus Wien), and many others.

Through hundreds of concerts, gigs and events over the past decade I have learned the importance of solidity, simplicity and precision in performances both on stage and in the studio — this combination of classical training with experience as a live and studio musician is of great help to me when I design a part for a piece or a song.
